What is a Business Strategy?

1 min read

A business strategy outlines the specific ways in which an organisation plans to position itself, achieve its short-term and long-term goals, and grow over a period of time.

A business without a strategy will often drift repeating what they have always done.

Your Business strategy is your game plan for success. It’s how you decide where to compete, how to win, and how to grow sustainably over time. Without a clear strategy, you risk wasting time, money, and effort.

A good strategy answers 3 key questions:

1. Where are we now? – Understand your market, customers, competitors, and internal strengths and weaknesses.

2. Where do we want to go? – Have clear goals to suit your definition of success covering areas such as growth, efficiency, market leadership, or innovation.

3. How will we get there? – Build out a roadmap to establish which customers to target, how to reach them, what to offer them, how to deliver it better than the competition, and how to align your team and resources.

Consider how to take your value out to market and also how to best deliver the promise made to your audience.

Strategy is not just planning, it’s about making choices and trade-offs. You can’t do everything for everyone, but a smart strategy helps you focus on what matters most and positions your business to win.

An effective strategy brings together all the different parts of your business into one cohesive picture.

Whether you’re a startup or scaling up, take time to build your strategy as it’s the difference between reacting to the market and having the resulting business or building the business that you and your customers want.
