What is the 80/20 rule?

3 min read

This is a rule that can transform every aspect of your life.

The 80/20 rule, also known as the Pareto Principle, is a concept that suggests a disproportionate relationship between inputs and outputs, causes and effects, or effort and results.

The 80/20 Rule can be applied to many aspects of life. The most common reference is that 80% of the results come from just 20% of the effort

In many countries you hear it referenced that roughly 20% of the population controls 80% of the wealth.

In business I’m sure you will relate to:

Income: 80% generated from 20% of your customers
Marketing: 80% of our results comes from 20% of our resources
Staff Issues: 80% of the problems are generated by 20% of your team
Service: 20% of customers often generate 80% of complaints.
Profits: 80% of a company’s profits often come from 20% of its customers.
Product range: 20% of your products typically generate 80% of its revenue.
Sales people: 20% of your sales team will usually produce 80% of total sales.
Analytics: 20% of a website’s pages usually generate 80% of its traffic.

BUT it’s more than just work or productivity; this principle can shape every part of life:

Time Management: 20% of your time is likely spent on activities that generate 80% of your productivity.
Wealth: 80% Habits, 20% Maths
Happiness: 80% Purpose, 20% Fun
Health: 80% Eating, 20% Exercising
Communication: 80% Listening, 20% Speaking
Achieving: 80% Doing, 20% Dreaming
Social grouping: 20% of the people do 80% of the talking.

I too often see people focused on the 20% factors. Often because they are shouting the loudest or falsely appearing more important.

Avoid the quick-gratification moments of looking at the 20%, but identify that your true success and fulfilment will come from the quiet, consistent 80%. The problem is that often feelings boring just executing the same and therefore look to change things before we persist.

It’s the habits, purpose, listening, and doing that build wealth, happiness, health, relationships, and achievements.

The 80/20 Rule isn’t about ignoring the 20%; it’s about recognising that the 80%, the habits, persistence, giving, and understanding, is what truly drives us forward.

Here are the key principles of the 80/20 rule:

  1. Disproportionate Distribution
The core idea is that roughly 80% of effects come from 20% of causes. This ratio isn’t exact but illustrates a significant imbalance in many situations.
  2. Focus on High-Impact Factors
It encourages identifying and prioritizing the vital few (20%) that produce the majority (80%) of results.
  3. Efficiency and Prioritisation
By focusing on the most impactful 20%, you can achieve better results with less effort and resources.
  4. Wide Applicability
The principle applies across various fields, including business, economics, time management, and personal productivity.
  5. Not a Mathematical Law
While often expressed as 80/20, the exact ratio can vary. The key is recognising the imbalance, not the specific numbers.
  6. Scalability
The principle can be applied recursively – within the top 20%, there may be another 80/20 split.
  7. Resource Allocation
It suggests allocating resources more heavily to the areas that produce the most significant outcomes.
  8. Identifying Leverage Points
Helps in finding the most effective areas to intervene or improve in a system or process.
  9. Simplification
Allows for simplifying complex situations by focusing on the most critical factors.
  10. Continuous Improvement
Encourages ongoing analysis to identify and capitalise on the most productive elements in any system or process.

By understanding and applying these principles, you can make more informed decisions, improve efficiency, and achieve better results with targeted efforts.

So, what will you focus on today, the 80% or the 20%?
