Why I Wrote The Financial Times Guide to Starting a Business

3 min read

Of course, founders don’t plan to fail when they start a business… but they end up hustling day to day without a plan to succeed.

I’ve spent 30+ years observing or supporting frustrated business owners and holding conversations with entrepreneurs who are exhausted, sometimes lost, out of control or simply repeating the things they did in the past that never progressed their business as desired. Many were stuck without any clear direction or they had tried everything they knew. And every time, I’ve thought: “I wish I could’ve spoken to them sooner or I wish they’d allow me to mentor them to share my experience and knowledge.”

So when I was approached by the publishers, Pearson, to write the Financial Times Guide to Starting a Business, it felt like the natural next step.

Of course, it was an honour to have been approached and a proud moment to see it in a printed version ready for launch.

My goal was to write the book I wish I had when I started.

Most business owners are awesome at what they do but have never been taught or trained to run a business. I wanted to provide a ‘guide’ to help founders convert their idea to profit and success (as defined by themselves).

It brings together the conversations, insights and lessons I’ve shared with hundreds of business owners through my work as a mentor – along with the costly mistakes I’ve seen time and time again, some of which I made myself when running one of my businesses in the past.

I wrote it for the entrepreneur who’s about to start, or who’s already started and realises it’s harder than expected.

I wrote it because I’ve seen what happens when businesses launch without structure, clarity or strategy: – They become trapped in ‘hustle mode’. Their time is controlled by others such as their customers, suppliers, even team members and they end up busy but broke, passionate but directionless and even falling out of love with their business.

I don’t want that for anyone.

My goal has always been to help business owners start strong, avoid unnecessary pain, and build something that truly works for them. To have the business they desire and their hard work deserves.

Inside the book, you’ll find a practical framework to guide both your thinking and your doing from mindset and planning, to numbers, marketing, pricing, and customer experience.

But more importantly, it’s designed to help you:

  • Gain clarity on your vision
  • Focus on what matters most
  • Avoid becoming one of the stats that 9 out of 10 fail

I know I can’t mentor everyone on a one to one basis. But through this book, I hope to support more founders than ever before – giving them the tools, structure and confidence to thrive.
