Your website has a tough job to do. It needs to work right for people who like to read, people who like to look and of course the search engine bots… So to make it easier to attract and convert users, I’m sharing the 10-point website checklist with you today.

This checklist is designed to be simple to complete, so you can either do it yourself or go through it with your website designer as part of your annual review.

There is a little bit of technical jargon on the checklist and when it comes to discussing websites, so let’s clear that up first:

The fold – This is the line where the screen ends. Above the fold is seen without the user having to scroll, below the fold requires a scroll or click down.

CTA – Call to Action. What do you want you reader to do? Click here, download, call now, for example.

Body – The main chunk of copy

Copy – The text

Content – Anything on your pages, including text, icons, forms, images and video

Backend – The area you access to manage the content on your site. This is where you can view, add or amend the pages, blogs, FAQs, testimonials and so on. You can also view the SEO tools and look at some analytics

Tracking – How the backend measures visitors to your site; where they came from, what they looked at and what actions they took (clicks, scroll etc.) Most commonly viewed in Google Analytics.

How does your website score?

There are ten areas by which you can score your website. Each area contains boxes to tick in one of three columns. You score points for each box you tick.

  • Urgent Action Required – scores you zero points
  • Needs Improvement – scores you 5 points
  • Excellent – scores you 10 points

Here’s an example:

The ten areas your website is scored on

  1. Above the fold
  2. Video
  3. Images
  4. Main Menu
  5. Personality
  6. Call To Action
  7. Body
  8. Trust
  9. Footer
  10. Tracking
